Workshop Overview
The Item Analysis Workshop was conducted to enhance the assessment skills of faculty and participants, focusing on improving the quality of examination items through structured analysis methods. The workshop combined theoretical presentations with practical hands-on activities to ensure participant engagement and deeper understanding.
Workshop Activities/Key Highlights
- Pre-hoc and Per-hoc Analysis
The workshop started with Dr. Sara Khan’s insightful discussion on pre-hoc and per-hoc analysis, emphasizing the importance of evaluating examination items before and during their development to prevent flaws and improve quality. She also highlighted common item-writing errors such as grammatical clues, repetitive wording, overly complex stems, and weak distractors, illustrating how these issues can compromise assessment validity. - Post-hoc Analysis
Building on this foundation, Dr. Faizan introduced participants to post-hoc analysis, explaining its role in evaluating item performance after assessments are conducted. He elaborated on key statistical measures such as the Difficulty Index, Discrimination Index, and Distractor Efficiency, and demonstrated how these tools guide educators in refining future test items. - Hands-on Activity
The workshop concluded with an interactive session in which participants practiced calculating and interpreting post-hoc metrics using sample data. This activity not only strengthened their theoretical understanding but also introduced them to the process of interpreting post-hoc reports, equipping them with a foundation to analyze item performance independently.
Conclusion
The workshop successfully met its objectives by equipping participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in item analysis. It strengthened participants’ capacity to design, evaluate, and refine assessment items, thereby contributing to improved quality assurance in examinations.
