Dental Materials

Introduction

The Science of Dental Biomaterials is a basic applied science; it entails the study of physical, mechanical, biological and chemical properties of materials used in dentistry, with emphasis on material in correlation with both clinical and non-clinical aspects.

An understanding of these properties as well as their handling is critical.

The subject provides an insight of dental materials that are currently used in dentistry, and cover the underlying principles of their functional properties, bioactivity and biocompatibility.

It includes the preventive dental materials, restorative (direct and indirect) dental materials and auxiliary dental materials.

Principal's Message

The Dental Materials Department at the Dental College at HITEC-Institute of Medical Sciences is dedicated to provide a thorough knowledge and guidance for second year undergraduate dental students. Our mission is to equip the students with all the necessary knowledge of this core basic dental science which is pertinent for their successful advancement towards subsequent years. Our primary objective would be to ensure that each student has an advocate knowledge base of dental materials which is imperative for the successful clinical dentistry.

Objectives

  • Introduce different materials and instruments to future dentists with an aspiration of helping them in getting a translational step when they step in their clinical practice.
  • Enable aspiring dentists to acquire critical skills to evaluate and select dental materials on the basis of their properties and structure such as restorative, endodontic, and impression materials.
  • Facilitate students to attain elementary understanding of clinical dental practice to promote a better understanding of application of dental materials in clinical environments.

Name: Dr. Nida Zehra Bano

Designation : Associate Professor and Head of the Department

Dr. Nida Zehra Bano completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Riphah International University (RIU) in 2012 and has been actively involved in academics since 2013. She earned her MPhil in Dental Materials from Army Medical College, National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS), Rawalpindi, in 2018.Before joining Dental college, HITEC-IMS, Dr. Nida served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Materials at Army Medical College, NUMS, where she also supervised and co-supervised postgraduate research in science of dental materials. She holds a Certificate in Health Professions Education (CHPE) from RIU and has to her credit three impact factor and seven national publications (citation index: 50, h-index: 3). In October 2025, she joined Dental College, HITEC-IMS, as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Sience of Dental Materials. Her primary research interests include the characterisation of advanced dental biomaterials and the study of adhesion mechanisms in restorative dentistry.
