Biochemistry

Introduction

Biochemistry can be defined as the science of the chemical basis of life. It is described as the study of the chemical constituents of living cells and of the reactions and processes they undergo. Medical treatment is firmly grounded in the knowledge of biochemistry and other basic sciences. Biochemistry is important for dental and medical physicians in many ways as it contributes to both the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. The judicious use of biochemical laboratory tests is an integral component of diagnosis and monitoring of treatment. A sound knowledge of biochemistry and other related basic disciplines is essential for the rational practice of medicine and related health sciences.

Mission

By the end of an academic year the students would be able to understand the chemical processes occurring in a living cell and their relation and implication to disease and health.

Objectives

The major objectives of biochemistry department are:

  • To give students the complete understanding, at the molecular level, of all of the chemical processes associated with living cells. To achieve this objective, they learn to isolate the numerous molecules found in cells, determine their structures, and analyze how they function.
  • To educate students how to use various techniques for above mentioned purposes.
  • To teach them the relationship between medicine and biochemistry and its important implications for the former.
  • To offer students a foundational understanding on which one’s practice should be built.
  • To stimulate curiosity and create the scientific habits essential for continual learning throughout one’s career.
  • To emphasize and generate an interest for research in medical education and biochemistry.
  • To motivate and educate students that the application of science must be practiced with humanity and the highest ethical standards while helping a patient.
